GMC strikes Doctor from Medical Register

Release Date: 18 June 2010

Dr Ubani, the out of hours doctor who accidentally administered a fatal dose of diamorphine has today been struck off the medical register. David Gray died at his home shortly after the tenfold overdose was given.

The Fitness to Practice Panel, convened by the General Medical Council, outlined that it had grave concerns about Dr Ubani’s competence, which had posed a significant risk to patients. GMC guidance explains that a doctor is only erased from the register where this is the only means of protecting patients and the wider public interest, which includes maintaining public trust and confidence in the profession. The decision means that Dr Ubani will not be able to practice medicine in the UK.

Inez Brown of Anthony Collins Solicitors, acting for the Gray family, said “the finding of impairment was welcomed by the family, in particular the acknowledgement that Dr Ubani’s conduct was inappropriate and not to the standard expected of a reasonably competent GP. It is hoped that this will lead to further reform of the out-of-hours care system in the UK, helping to ensure that such a tragic and avoidable incident does not happen again”

The Gray family are continuing to pursue their complaint in the European Court of Human Rights.
