Science Capital meeting paves way for concerted action on climate change.
Developing a consensus on how to deliver a low carbon economy isn't easy, particularly at a global level. Responsibility is increasing left to city regions to find the best way forward. Now, Birmingham is taking a lead by bringing its business, financial and scientific leaders together to develop a common strategy and build new partnerships.
This week, over 80 experts gathered in central Birmingham to discuss the latest policies and advances in energy including new hydrogen fuel, solar and biomass technologies.
The West Midlands boasts one of the largest concentrations of skills and knowledge needed to plan and build a low carbon world. Hence it was a logical place to host the meeting, the inaugural event of Science Capital. Directed by Michael Overduin, the organisation was set up to bring together scientists and business experts, innovators and investors.
Supported by Birmingham City Council, the meeting served as a brainstorming session for those who develop, fund and support new fuel systems and devices. Representatives from seven universities were present, and focussed on innovative solutions from Birmingham and Warwick. Catherine Burke of Martineau moderated the discussions, ensuring a balance of legal and regulatory insights to formulate new frameworks needed to achieve broader impact.
The gathering took place as the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition prepares a national strategy for adapting to a changing climate, with Julia King reporting on the latest thinking from the government's Climate Change Committee.
Science Capital's first event was a sell-out success. David Hall, Senior Associate at Anthony Collins Solicitors, said "I see a prospect of big opportunities for higher education, business and individual researchers in the West Midlands. There is a real need for an accessible, open network for us to realise the opportunities for all parties in the region. We passionately support what Science Capital is trying to achieve and are pleased to be working in partnership with them".
The future includes turning the Low Carbon meeting into an annual event. In the meantime the next Science Capital meetings focus on Innovative Healthcare (on 15 September) and the Digital World (on 13 October), both will be held in central Birmingham.
